Sand Mountain, Sand Hollow State Recreation Area
Sand Mountain is located in the Sand Hollow State Park, east of Washington, UT. The dunes cover an area of approximately 100 km2 and vary in thickness from 0 to 15 m. The sand accumulates in irregular hummocky mounds on Sand Mountain s a result of southwesterly winds. The sand forms poorly developed dunes and in some areas are partially stabilized by sparse vegetation. The almost pure frosted quartz sand is derived from the weathering of the red Navajo Sandstone and the upper member of Kayenta formation [Hayden, 2005].
