Killpecker Dunes

The Killpecker Dunes in southern Wyoming extend eastward from the Green River Formation across the Rock Springs uplift and into the Great divide basin covering approximately 550 km2 [Ahlbrandt, 1974; Mayer and Mahan, 2004]. Prevailing westerly and southwesterly winds form this unidirectional dune field with individual dunes up to 45 m in height.  The western portion of the dune field is mostly dormant, while the active dunes, consisting primarily of dome, barchan and parabolic winds occurring in the easterly direction.  The main source of sand, based on heavy mineral assemblages, is sandstone and siltstone from the Laney member of the Green River Formation to the west of the dune field [Ahlbrandt, 1974].killpecker
